Just getting to footy training was a battle for Koby Stevens, let alone catching the eye of an AFL scout.The 18-year-old midfielder from Bairnsdale, 270km east of Melbourne, had to complete a laborious four-hour round bus trip twice a week to attend training in Morwell with his TAC Cup side Gippsland Power.The extra travel paid off when Stevens was picked at No. 23 by West Coast, the clubs third and final selection in the national draft on Thursday.The hard-working on-baller said he had accepted the travel as necessary to achieve his goal of playing footy at the elite level.I travel to school, which is an hour from where I live on the bus, and then also another hour to training so its pretty hectic and I get back about 10.30 at night, Stevens said. I got used to it as the year went on, but it was pretty hard.Stevens could be a steal for the Eagles as a second-round pick, with the Power co-captain at one stage touted as a possible top-10 selection.The 187cm, 83kg player finished the under-18 national titles as equal leading tackler, averaging six a match.He also averaged 26 disposals a game in eight matches this year for Gippsland, where he won the award for most professional player.Stevens also has shown leadership qualities, the Vic Country under-18s representative captaining the AIS-AFL Academy team this year.Gippsland coach Damian Carroll said the hours spent travelling had shown Stevens level of dedication.Thats the length he had to go to, I suppose, Carroll said.If he didnt do that, he wouldnt have got picked up because theres no other league competition here.Carroll described the teenager as a ferocious tackler who was good at clearances.He said Stevens already had the body type to play in the AFL.That maturity was on show in April when the Victorian starred for the academy, kicking three of their six goals in a 102-point defeat at Etihad Stadium against VFL club Williamstown.Stevens, who compares his own playing style to that of Geelongs Joel Selwood, was excited about the move west, despite an initial preference to remain in Victoria.There were a few tears from mum last night but shes really warmed to it, he said. She knows all I want to do is play footy and she cant be more proud of me.Being mentored by Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley during his stint with the AIS has clearly left an impact on Stevens.I could email him, message him, whatever I needed hed be there to give me advice, he said. It was just unreal to have him by my side.
