Built in 1818, the Old Vic was originally dubbed the Royal Coburg Theatre in deference to its patrons, Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. The theatre was relegated to staging variety revues for its first six years, until obtaining a dramatic license in 1824. Upon licensure the theatre quickly became known for its repertory Shakespearean productions. In 1833 it underwent its first name change to the Royal Victorian Theatre in honor of the heir to throne, Princess Victoria.Over the next fifty years its name would informally take on the vernacular of the day, as it became the Old Vic to its patrons and to the public as well. Subsequent name changes would include the New Victoria, the Royal Victoria Coffee and Music Hall, and the Royal Victoria Hall and Coffee Tavern. Still, to her public, she was the Old Vic, which was her official name in 1929 when The Old Vic Company was established, led by Sir John Gielgud. He would gain notoriety at the Vic with his interpretations of Shakespeares Hamlet and Richard II. The owner at the time, Lilian Baylis, emphasized Shakespeare but also established a ballet troupe. The two companies would rotate between the Old Vic and Sadlers Wells Theatres until the ballet troupe moved to Sadlers permanently in 1935.The war years were challenging for the Old Vic. During WWI the theatre would continue unscathed. Baylis was quoted as saying, in the midst of Zeppelin and bombing raids, Whats a raid when my curtain is up! However, the theatre would be less fortunate during the Great War, as she sustained a direct hit during the Blitz. She would not reopen until 1950. From 1953 to 1958 the entire First Folio of Shakespeare was performed at the Old Vic for the second time. The entire set of 36 plays had played there previously from 1920 to 1925. Richard Burton played Hamlet in the 1950s set. Actress Judi Dench would grace the boards at the Old Vic for four seasons beginning in 1957. Her roles included Ophelia, Hermia, and Juliet. The Old Vic governors offered the theatre as the first home for the National Theatre Company in 1962, with Olivier as its director. The Company opened in 1963 with Peter OToole as Hamlet. Over the next 13 years the National Theatre Company would bring regulars like Albert Finney, Anthony Hopkins, Geraldine McEwan, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith to the Vic. Oliviers last performance, Trevor Griffiths The Party, was at the Vic in 1973. Peter Hall assumed the directorate of the National Theatre at that time. His productions included John Gabriel Borkman, No Mans Land, and Hamlet. Richardson, Ashcroft, Gielgud and Finney were headliners for those productions. The National Theatre Company moved to the South Bank in 1976.After the National Theatre moved, the Old Vic went through a time of leasing to various visiting companies until 1982 when it was purchased by Canadian businessman Ed Mirvish. He restored the Old Vic to its former glory, basing the facade on an 1830 engraving and the auditorium on the design of the theatre in 1871. From 1987 to 1990 Jonathan Miller directed seventeen productions there, collecting five Olivier awards. Peter Hall returned in 1997 with Becketts Waiting for Godot, starring Ben Kingsley and Alan Howard. The Mirvish family elected to sell the theatre in 1998. To save the Old Vic from a fate worse than death, a registered charity was founded to save her. The Old Vic Theatre Trust 2000 was successful in purchasing the theatre. During the interim Kevin Spacey won the Olivier Award for best actor for the Iceman Cometh. The Trusts first production, in 1999, was Peter Halls Amadeus, which received five Olivier nominations. Spacey became the first artistic director of The Old Vic Theatre Company in 2003. He has acted and/or directed several productions since then, including his Shakespearean debut in Richard II.At present the theatre features The Norman Conquests. Upcoming features include Complicit, Dancing at Lughanasa and The Bridge Projects offerings of The Cherry Orchard and The Winters Tale. The Old Vic is situated on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road, just to the south and east of Waterloo Station.
